Sunchild - The Gnomon (2008)

The debut album from this band from Ukraine.

Sunchild is Antony Kalugin on synths, keyboards, acoustic guitars and vocals.
He is being helped by numerous guest musicians on drums, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone, oboe, cello, bayan, guitars and vocals.

Sunchild, who has so far released seven albums, started out as Antony Kalugin's solo project. He is well known from his main band Karfagen and the side project Hoggwash.

Sunchild has today become one of his two main bands and they are now a full band. But not in 2008.

This album is a double CD album, giving us one and an half hour of music.

The music is very melodic symphonic prog. It almost feels like pop at times and it has some musical and rock opera feelings.

There is a lot of Pink Floyd, Genesis and the more soft bands like The Moody Blues in this album. All of this with the usual Antony Kalugin twist and flair.

This album is a big mouthful. It is also great value for money and pretty timeless. Do not let the year of the release scare you from getting this album. It has the 2020 sound too.

This is a good album and can be rated well among the other Sunchild albums. A good band with a good debut album, indeed.
