Wappa Gappa - Yamataikoku (1996)

The debut album from this Japanese band.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, bass, keyboards, guitars and female vocals.

This band released three albums before they were disbanded. I will review these three albums, starting with this album.

The band is listed as jazz/fusion in ProgArchives and I was mentally prepared for some Japanese fusion. A genre I really like.

That though is not what we get on this album.

The basis of this album is neo-prog. Add some jazzy rock and then some symphonic prog. That is the hour of music on this album.

The vocals are really very good and Ms. Tamami Yamamoto is one of the best vocalists I have ever heard from Japan. Perhaps even the best vocalist.

The music is also at times pretty muscular and the musicians delivers one hour of good musicianship.

This is indeed a very good album which ticks most boxes.

Check it out !
