Zon - Astral Projector (1978)

The debut album from this Canadian band.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of cello, bass, drums, clavinet, synths, minimoog, piano, organ, electric piano, percussion, guitars and vocals.

Canada has a rich prog scene. It also the best and most famous pomp rock band..... Saga.

Zon has had a listen to the Saga albums and has decided that they also wanted a piece of this cake. Hence this forty minutes long album.

But where Saga was epic and very much pomp in a progressive rock vein, Zon and this album is bypassing those elements and goes for a rock and pop version of pomp rock.

The vocals is identical to Saga's vocals. The music is much more rocking and verse-chorus-verse orientated.

The music is a bit fast at times without being hard or heavy. The keyboards, all of them, are pretty poppy too. The guitars are in the background.

There is a happy feel over this album and not much to report.

This album and Zon is a poor man's Saga. Saga without all the good bits.

There are a couple of half decent songs here but that is all. I am not really impressed.
