3 - 3.2: The Rules Have Changed (2018)

The second album from this British project.

The project is now reduced to a Robert Berry project. Keith Emerson is listed as the composer and arranger here.

Carl Palmer has left this band and Keith Emerson departed this world a couple of years ago. It has been claimed that the last ever pieces of music he ever wrote is included on this album.
Poignant, indeed.

Robert Berry does the vocals, keyboards, bass and guitars here. Nobody has been credited as the drummer.

Their 1998 album To The Power Of Three was frankly a horrible AOR album. You can find my review somewhere else in this blog.

The Rules Has Changed is a different kettle of fish, though...

The music is a mix of AOR and progressive rock. Mostly progressive rock. The sound is muscular, contemporary and very good indeed. Gone is the crimes of the 1980s.

Robert Berry does a brilliant job here and this album is a good, intended or not, tribute to Keith Emerson. A lot of the music has his trademarks.

Best of all, the music is very good throughout. It is indeed one of the better albums anno 2018. My only gripe is the lack of some more great tracks. That aside, this is an album well worth checking out.

3.5 points
