If - If (1970)

The debut album from this British band.

The band was a seven piece big band with a lineup of guitars, bass, woodwinds, drums, percussion, organ, piano and vocals.

Brass rock was a genre in USA who gave us Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Other countries also got their own brass rock bands too.

If gave UK a good brass rock band and I have a handful of their albums up for review this winter.

... Starting with this, their debut album.

The music here is a mix of soul, blues and rock. There is also some jazz here as there is some hints of Soft Machine here. But those hints are only faint.

The bedrock is a mix of soul, blues and rock.

The woodwinds are everywhere. They do feel natural and organic here and the songs would simply not work without them. I state this although I am no fans of woodwinds at all.

The music is pretty catchy throughout. The songs are good and full of small, quirky details.

The end result is a good album and one to check out.
