Os Mutantes - O 'A' E O 'Z' (1992)

The eight album from this Brazilian band.

The band was a quartet with a lineup of mellotron, clavinet, sitar, guitars, bass, hammond organ, tabla, percussion, drums, cello and vocals.

This is their second album after the split with their original vocalist Rita Lee. She went on to selling million of records and becoming a national treasure in Brazil.

Os Mutantes also have a pretty big status in Brazil. And that is thankfully because of their music.

The band switched over to a much more symphonic prog sound after the split from Rita Lee. They still kept their tropicana sound too.

The opening track, the title track, is a bit of a homage to Yes. There is also some ELP references here. But mostly Yes references.

The band still keep themselves pretty close to Yes on the rest of the album. There are also some rockers here and some psych rock in the vein of early Os Mutantes.

The music is very colorful and full of soul and passion. Which is unusual for progressive rock. Nevertheless, this album has passion in abundance.

There is also a nice mellotron sound here and the vocals are good.

This is another good album from Os Mutantes and I hope more people will discover this band.
