Lucifer's Friend - Banquet (1974)

The fourth album from this German band.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of bass, drums, moog, keyboards, piano, organ, guitars, percussion and vocals.
The band had support from guest musicians who provided strings, horns, saxophones and choirs.

Banquet is the album where the band went progressive rock. This is how it was sold to me. And I like progressive rock. This is indeed a progressive rock + blog.

And there is indeed progressive rock on this album. Banquet is a pretty ambitious project with lots of woodwinds and intricate songs.

Besides of prog rock, the band is also dipping into brass rock a lot. There is indeed a lot of brass rock here. Their hard rock DNA also runs through this album.

The second songs Thus Spoke Oberon is a fully fledged progressive rock song even Yes would have been happy with.

Sorrow is another prog rock song which will make prog rock fans pretty happy.

It is a bit of a pity that the band did not follow the road of Banquet on at least one more album. The band went back to their good old DNA.... which is hard rock with some progressive rock influences... on their next album.

Banquet is a good album though which is a bit drowned out in brass and woodwinds. That is my gripe with this album. Besides of that, this is a good album.
