Spock's Beard - Day For Night (1999)

The fourth album from this US band.

The band was a quintet on this album with a lineup of mellotron, synths, organ, piano, guitars, bass, percussion, drums and vocals.
The band had some help from a strings and woodwind ensemble.

The band had found their formula, they found it on their debut album, and were pursuing this on their albums.

That means a mix of Kansas, Yes, Gentle Giant and Genesis. This with an US sound and take on symphonic prog.

The music is a mix of epic, drama, symphonic and quirky on this album.

There is a lot of good ideas floating around here. Unfortunate, some of them feels like they have been used before on their previous albums.

The music is indeed good. But it also feels like the band is  threading water on this album and is not developing at all.

The vocals and the ideas here is still good and this is indeed a good album. Nevertheless, I did expect better things from this band.
