Archestra. The - Arches (2013)

The one and only album from this band from Belarus.

The band was a eleven pieces big band with a lineup of guitars, bass, double bass, saxophone, piano, violin, cello, bassoon, drums and vocals.

This is one of two bands who emerged from the implosion of Rational Diet. The other band was Five Story Ensemble.

It is a great shame that Rational Diet is no more as they were one of the best contemporary avant-garde/RIO bands around. They left a big vacuum in the scene. A vacuum The Archestra tried to fill.

The music is chamber rock with some opera here too. The music is at times pretty epic and non-linear. It is off the scale when it comes to what people regards as modern music.

There are some dissonant vocals and a lot of dissonant electric guitars. There is also a lot of dissonant strings here with the violin being tortured a lot.

The result is a good album which reminds us how effective and rewarding a good avant-garde album is. I hope will get some more avant-garde bands from the ex Soviet countries as these countries is fertile grounds for avant-garde prog.
