Band Of Rain - Svengali (2019)

The sixth album from this British band.

The band is a duo of Chris Gill and Misha Steinbacher who did the guitars, bass, keyboards, synths, drums (machines ?) and the vocals here.

This album is my first meeting with this band. I got this album and their new album up for review this spring.

The reason why I have avoided having a deeper look into their first five albums is their reputation for being ambient music albums. I am not a big fan of that genre.

Svengali, with the excellent cover art-work, clocks in at seventy-four minutes. That is a long album in these days standards where vinyl is again coming into fashion.

The music on this album is indeed ambient psych rock. The reference is Pink Floyd.

There is a lot of meandering synths and keyboards here punctuated with some guitar solos and vocals. There is not much vocals and there is no songs here. Just long ambient pieces.

The vocals and guitars brings some dynamics to this album. Not everything here is horizontal ambient music. Nevertheless, a big chunk of it is just that.

This is not a bad album and it will find a lot of fans who will disagree with me. For me, it is a decent album and nothing more than that.
