Opeth - In Cauda Venenum (2019)

The 13th album from this Swedish band.

Please note that this album comes in both a Swedish and an English version. I have reviewed the English version.

The band is a quintet on this album with a lineup of guitars, bass, minimoog, mellotron, grand piano, harpsichord, fender rhodes, percussion, drums, hammond organ and vocals.

I have reviewed their first twelve albums in (first) #1 of this blog and this blog. I really liked reviewing those albums as they tells a fascinating story about a band going from death metal to progressive rock.

There is no doubts that Opeth is now one of the leading progressive rock bands after migrating slowly over from the death metal genre. The very good reviews from the prog rock fans proves that this transformation has succeeded.

There is no metal at all on this album. OK, the music is a bit harsh on one of the songs. But that is more than acceptable.

The music is epic and full of interesting details throughout this album. The vocals are great and ditto for the musicianship.

My only gripe is the lack of any big variations in their music. That aside, this is a very good album and one to check out.

3.5 points
