Numen - Samsara (1998)

The debut album from this Spanish band.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of guitars, Spanish guitars, bass, drums, synths, percussion and vocals.
Numerous other musicians provided violin, flute, saxophone, slide guitar and vocals.

Their very good second album Numenclatura from 2014 put this band on my map of good bands. You can read my review here.

The band has had a stop-start career with this album released sixteen years before their second album and twenty years before their third album. I will soon review their third album too.

Their brand of music is neo-prog. Neo-prog with some local folk music influences.

The vocals are English, but the music sounds Spanish to me. The neo-prog, that is. Which is a good thing.

The band has not really mastered their sound yet and that is pretty evident. The vocals are good, but could had been a lot better.

The music is good though with a lot of guitars and synths. Those are supplemented with the other instruments in a clever way. In particular by the flutes.

The result is an hour long album. A good album indeed and one to check out. This is one of the better bands in the neo-prog scene and deserve a lot of credit and popularity.
